THE CALMA METHOD
A gentle, science-informed approach to baby sleep — for mamas who refuse to choose between boundaries and love.
— What is the CALMA Method?
Most sleep methods ask you to pick a side: either let your baby cry alone, or hold them all night. The CALMA Method was created because neither extreme felt right.
CALMA is a five-step framework that teaches babies to fall asleep — and stay asleep — through presence, rhythm, and gradual independence. No cry-it-out. No cold turkey. Just a clear, compassionate structure that works.
It's designed for babies 0 to 18 months, and it works in both English and Spanish — because exhausted mamas deserve support in the language that feels closest to their heart.
— The five steps of the CALMA Method:
C — Contact Regulating physical touch within the crib: a hand on the chest, holding a tiny hand, resting your cheek close. Your calm breath regulates your baby's breath. Your nervous system is their first sleep tool.
A — Accompaniment A consistent, gentle phrase repeated softly: "It's sleep time, mama's here." Few words. Soft voice. Predictable rhythm. This gives your baby security without overstimulation.
L — Limits with presence You stay present — but you stop reverting to rocking or feeding to sleep. This step is about structure, not distance. You hold the boundary with love, not abandonment.
M — Movement, contained and fading Gentle rhythmic pats. A soft side-to-side sway — all within the crib. Always controlled. Always decreasing over time. Your baby gradually learns to need less.
A — Autoregulation You observe before you intervene. You give your baby the space to practice self-settling — not alone, but with you available. Not reactive. Present.
